Synopsis:

Development

The film, along with its title, was announced on 28 July 2021, on the occasion of Dulquer Salmaan’s 35th birthday. Salmaan, who portrays a gangster in the film, stated that “King of Kotha” would have all the elements to satisfy the audience, including perfectly timed clap points, catchy songs, and elevation sequences.

He expressed his excitement about collaborating with his childhood friend Abhilash Joshiy, who is the son of veteran filmmaker Joshiy. The screenplay is written by Abhilash N. Chandran, known for his work in “Porinju Mariam Jose” (2019).

In October 2022, Salmaan described the film as an action gangster genre noir film set in a fictional town, striking a balance between content and commercial gangster drama.

Filming and Casting

Principal photography for “King of Kotha” began on 27 September 2022 in Karaikudi, with additional filming taking place in Rameswaram and Ramanathapuram. Nimish Ravi served as the film’s cinematographer.

Aishwarya Lekshmi was cast as the female lead opposite Dulquer Salmaan, while Shabeer Kallarakkal was roped in to play the main antagonist. Gokul Suresh, Chemban Vinod Jose, and Sudhi Koppa were also added to the cast. Nyla Usha and Shanthi Krishna joined in key roles.

Zee Studios collaborated with Wayfarer Films for the film’s production, marking their maiden feature film production venture in Malayalam. Filming took place for 95 days, and the Karaikudi schedule concluded on 21 February 2023.

Music

The background score for “King of Kotha” is composed by Jakes Bejoy, while the songs are composed separately by Jakes Bejoy and Shaan Rahman. The music rights for the film were acquired by Sony Music India. The track “People of Kotha,” featured in the motion poster video, was released on 23 June 2023.

Release

“King of Kotha” is scheduled for a theatrical release on 25 August 2023, coinciding with the festival of Onam. The film will be released in Malayalam, as well as dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada languages.
